Stephanie Lightbown

Hi, I’m Stephanie Lightbown, an artist and photographer based in Scotland. My work is inspired by the natural world, with a focus on abstraction, texture, and form. I’m particularly drawn to coastal landscapes, especially seaweed and the tidal zones, where I explore the hidden complexity of the shoreline. Through photography, I capture nature’s details, but my process goes beyond that, using techniques like collage, textiles, and laser cutting to deconstruct and reassemble these elements into layered, tactile artworks.

I blend traditional craftsmanship, such as bookbinding and embroidery, with modern technology, incorporating digital design and laser cutting. My work often takes the form of three-dimensional box art, where I carefully plan compositions that focus on minimalism, subtraction, and repetition. The box frames help define and emphasize each element, creating a sense of containment and depth.

Living near the sea, I often gather natural objects like seaweed and driftwood during my walks, which become part of my art. This process of collecting and reimagining materials reflects my connection to the natural world, allowing me to evoke its beauty in subtle, minimalist ways.

Though I’ve worked in various mediums for years, I see this current phase of my practice as a new chapter, combining different techniques and materials to form a unique visual language. My aim is to create a sense of place, inviting viewers to experience the intricate details of nature in a new, intimate way. Whether through photography, textiles, or assemblage, my work is a reflection of my ongoing exploration of the world around me.
